Ebay is an auction site. With Ebay, the world is your garage sale. You can buy guitars, cars, books, old watches, almost anything. From time to time you even see things like condos in Hawaii for auction.
The wonderful thing about auctions is, the price is always fair. You can dream that that old stove you have is worth thousands, but if Ebay sells it for $75 then that's what it's worth. At the same time, if you put something on Ebay, it pretty much always sells, at least if you list it as an auction. You may get more or less than you expected (I have had both happen) but at the end of the day, it will sell and your item will be gone.
It's a really nice feeling to sell something and recapture that space in your garage or apartment, and know that your item has found a new home.
It's also fun to search Ebay and find deals that everyone else has overlooked. There are many things like car parts, where Ebay has beceom the best source for things that you really can't easily find anywhere else. Part of the reason for this is that you can see what people are selling all over the countrt, when before, you could only buy most things from people in your neighborhood. So if you have some wierd car that needs a doo-dad, and some guy in Omaha Nebraska has what you want, you're in luck. That's why I think of Ebay as a national garage sale, with all prices based on bids.

There are other auction sites, such as http://www.publicsurplus.com, though they are mostly not as good.
